Weather & Climate Services - Expertise

Remote sensing algorithm development

IMSG develops and improves algorithm and software systems by using data from environmental satellites to monitor the atmosphere, oceans and land. These systems improve weather forecasting, climate monitoring, detection of natural hazards (e.g., wildfires and severe storms), and detection of environmental changes (e.g., coral reef bleaching and deforestation).

Weather and climate modeling

IMSG develops and improves modeling capabilities for regional weather and climate forecasts. The ultimate outcome is to improve weather forecasts to reduce the loss of lives and damages to properties. Our services include:

  • Integrating data inputs (e.g., regional observation data and global forecasts) and systems for data assimilation, modeling and analysis into an operational forecast system
  • Collecting climatological information, such as topography, vegetation type, soil type and other necessary parameters, and integrating them into weather models
  • Integrating operational forecast systems into an efficient computing systems
  • Tuning forecast systems for high performance

Modernization of hydro-meteorological service

IMSG employs a methodical process for improving forecasts of weather and hydro-met hazards. First, we examine the existing conditions of national-level hydro-met organization (e.g., its capabilities, organizational structure, operations, equipment, and human capital). Second, we develop the goals for a modern hydro-met organization. Our team, which is made up of experts with established careers in the weather business and U.S. National Weather Service, then develops recommendations and plans for bridging the gaps and implements a modern hydro-met organization.

Planning for climate change adaptation

IMSG helps societies and communities make better decisions about climate change threats and minimize risks to their safety and economic wellbeing. We develop organizational resources and new ways of learning and sharing science-based climate change adaptation practices. Our services include:

  • Coordinating different societal sectors to develop climate change adaptation strategies for population, infrastructures, economic activities and ecosystems
  • Developing education and outreach programs for community leaders and citizens
  • Testing adaptation strategies in limited, high-risk areas
  • Planning for large scale adaptation implementation
  • Incorporating adaptation strategies into developmental planning

Climatological database

IMSG designs and develops databases of long-term records for the atmosphere, air quality, land, sea, hydrology, and water quality. Our services include integrating the database to supporting IT infrastructure and providing lifecycle support. This database establishes baselines for many variables that affect societies, economic activities, food production and public health, and has many beneficial uses, such as:

  • Formulating statistical weather and climate forecasts
  • Assessing weather hazard risks and regional climate change
  • Decision-making in weather and climate-sensitive economic activities, such as agriculture, forestry and urban development
  • Improving construction planning and codes, particularly in high-risk and hazard-prone areas
  • Conducting feasibility studies for major developments (e.g., highways, dams, bridges and housing)
  • Decision in investment strategies for infrastructures and insurance
