Systems Programmer

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) (www.imsg.com), a Federal Government Contractor located in Rockville, Maryland is currently seeking to hire highly motivated System Programmers to support NOAA/NESDIS/Center for Satellite Applications Research (STAR) on science-based data systems development.  IMSG supports STAR in applied scientific research and transition from research to operations (R2O) in a semi-research and semi-operational working environment along with U.S. government scientists, visiting scientists, and other contractors.  The Systems Programmer will be responsible for enhancing and maintaining an existing scientific satellite data processing system implemented in C/C++ and FORTRAN 90/95.  The program is a system enabling the development and testing of Level 2 products within a single system. 

STAR is the science engine of NOAA/NESDIS.  It maintains and develops a wide range of operational and experimental remote sensing data product algorithms as well as satellite sensor calibration and validation (CAL/VAL) and data processing capabilities for the current and next generation environmental satellites mainly from U.S., while it is also working with other NOAA agencies (such as NOAA/NWS/NCEP for numerical weather prediction models required data products and parameters derived from satellite observations), as well as European and other international environmental satellite agencies for R&D and operational collaboration.  Environmental monitoring data products (for land, atmosphere and ocean) from current (e.g. in POES and GOES programs) and from next (e.g. in NPP, JPSS, and GOES-R programs) generation satellites have critical importance for weather forecasting, natural hazards warning, climate change detection, and many other applications. 

Duties:

  • Analyze the existing system to gain a complete understanding of the architecture
  • Analyze specific existing scientific algorithms to gain a complete understanding of the implementation
  • Review current issues and create a plan to address them
  • Implement build and release procedures
  • Produce code that adheres to internal standards
  • Troubleshoot existing programs and scripts
  • Develop and manage control scripts
  • Participate in the code review process
  • Perform relevant system documentation
  • Perform algorithm integration

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in C++ and/or FORTRAN 90/95
  • Experience with Perl and shell scripting
  • Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux
  • Experience processing and managing large volumes of data
  • Experience with interoperability between Fortran and C/C++ is desirable
  • Experience with CM tools such as ClearCase is desirable
  • Code integration experience is desirable
  • An Atmospheric Science degree or experience is a plus
  • U.S. Green Card or Citizenship preferred
